Philip Adams has retold the story of Lewis Carroll's model for the Mad Hatter, a cabinet maker called Theophilus Carter. Among other things he invented an alarm clock bed which, at a predetermine time, dumped the sleeper into a tub of cold water. I am grateful my mum never found out about this bed. She would have bought me one hoping that “Michael’s punctuality needs improvement” would not appear on my school reports again.
